Hana’s Umami Black is a hand-built moving-coil cartridge designed by Masao Okada and manufactured by Excel Sound in Japan. A diamond cantilever and nude Microline diamond stylus transfer groove motion to the new OKD generator.
Diamond cantilever and OKD generator
The generator combines an inverted U-shaped front yoke, an integrated pole piece and rear yoke, and a neodymium magnet. Its 2 mm square hybrid permalloy armature carries hand-wound 30-micron, 4N copper coils. Cryogenic treatment is applied to key magnetic components and the gold-plated output pins.
Auricle body with Urushi finish
An A7075 duralumin body supports the open-air generator. Black Urushi lacquer and a zirconia front inlay complement the mechanical design. Threaded mounting holes simplify installation. The 0.3 mV output requires a suitable MC phono stage or step-up transformer; recommended tracking force is 2 g and load impedance is at least 50 Ω.
